Design preset

Ornament, precisely placed

Every element here is decorated, and every decoration sits exactly where the geometry puts it. Symmetry rather than asymmetry; glows rather than shadows; hard angles rather than soft curves.

The system

What the preset decides

Geometry

Triangles, chevrons, stepped corners and rotated diamonds. The ornament is built from mathematics rather than drawn, which is what keeps it from looking fussy.

Glow, not shadow

A soft halo around gold elements, as backlit signage. A drop shadow would read as ordinary dark mode the moment it appeared.

Visible borders

Resting gold rules sit at sixty per cent rather than thirty. At thirty they measure about two to one against the card — present in the stylesheet and invisible on the screen.

The method

Four movements

Set the axis

Decide the centre line first. Everything radiates from it.

Frame it

A thin rule with stepped brackets at opposite corners.

Track the caps

Display type at a fifth of an em. Most of what reads as Deco.

Light the gold

A halo at twenty per cent. Never a drop shadow.

Enquiries

Frequently asked

Is this a mock-up or the real thing?
A specimen, hand-built to the preset's specification so the style can be seen whole rather than as a thumbnail. The preset itself is a set of WordPress Theme Settings; a generated site inherits the palette, the type pairing and the sharp corners. The stepped brackets, rotated diamonds and sunburst are still being folded into the preset and are not all emitted automatically yet.
Why are the gold borders at sixty per cent?
Because at thirty they are invisible. Composited over the charcoal card, gold at thirty per cent measures about two to one — below the three to one that a non-text indicator needs. A card whose only resting affordance is that border would be unbordered until hovered. At sixty it reaches roughly four to one, and brightening on hover becomes an enhancement rather than the thing that first makes the card visible.
Why is the numeral inside the diamond upright?
Because the container is rotated forty-five degrees and the content is counter-rotated by the same amount. Skip the second half and the numerals sit on their corner, which reads as a bug rather than as a motif.
