Monochrome Back to the creator
Design preset

Black, white, and nowhere to hide.

A preset with no accent colour, no gradient and no shadow. Scale, rule weight and negative space carry the whole design, which is why it has to be judged at full length rather than as a swatch.

What the preset decides

01

Palette

True black on true white. Grey appears only for secondary text and hairlines, so every element has to earn its place through position and weight instead of hue.

02

Structure

Lines rather than boxes. Hairlines divide, 2px borders enclose, 4px rules separate sections and 8px closes the page — structure with no mass behind it.

03

Emphasis

Inversion instead of colour. Where another preset would reach for an accent, this one swaps black and white — as this card does when you hover it.

Two serifs do the work: a high-contrast display face for anything large, and a text face sized for reading at length. The pairing is what makes the style read as editorial rather than merely plain — a single sans would have made the same page look like a wireframe of itself.

The measure is set in characters rather than pixels, so a line holds roughly the same number of words whatever the screen. That is the part most often lost when a design is rebuilt from a screenshot.

Restraint is only convincing at length. A monochrome swatch tells you nothing; a monochrome page tells you whether the restraint was a decision or an absence.

Questions

Is this a mock-up or the real thing?

A specimen. It is hand-built to the preset's specification so the style can be seen whole rather than as a thumbnail. The preset itself is a set of WordPress Theme Settings, and a generated site carries the palette, the type pairing and scale, zero radius, the three surfaces and the inversion-on-dark rule from day one. The finer editorial details here — the boxed drop cap, the pull-quote mark, the elevated pricing tier, the line textures — are still being folded into the preset and are not all emitted automatically yet.

Can I change it afterwards?

Yes. A preset only sets Theme Settings, and every one of them stays editable in WordPress. Changing the palette moves every button and link that references it, because they point at the role rather than carrying a colour of their own.

Why serif, and why no accent colour?

The serif is what keeps a two-colour page from reading as a wireframe, and the missing accent is the constraint that makes the rest work: with nothing to highlight with, scale and inversion have to carry emphasis, which is a more durable hierarchy than a coloured button.
