Weathered colour, grown shapes

Moss, terracotta, sand and timber on rice paper. Every neutral is warm, every corner is rounded past the point of being a rectangle, and nothing is saturated enough to look synthetic. One of these colours does two jobs; the rest know which job is theirs.

What the preset decides

Three rules

1

Moss does both jobs

Five point two four as text and five point three eight under white. That is rare — most accents in this set work in one direction and fail in the other, which is why they need two values and this one does not.

2

Terracotta carries the loam

White on it is 2.93 and the loam ink is 4.81. It is a surface and a warm fill with dark text, exactly as the specification uses it — the failure only appears if it is promoted to a button with a white label.

3

Every neutral is warm

Paper, stone, sand and timber are all tinted toward yellow. One cool grey among them reads as a different stylesheet rather than as a neutral, which is the fastest way to break the whole register.

Questions

Frequently asked

Is this a mock-up or the real thing?
A specimen, hand-built to the preset's specification so the style can be seen whole rather than as a thumbnail. The preset itself is a set of WordPress Theme Settings, and a generated site carries the paper, the moss, Fraunces over Nunito, the pills and the warm timber borders. The blob shapes and the paper grain are markup, so a section that wants them still asks for them.
Why is the terracotta button's text dark?
Because white on it is 2.93 to one. Terracotta is a weathered colour — it sits in the middle of the lightness range, which is exactly where a fill carries dark text well and light text badly.
Why is nothing square?
Because the style is about grown things rather than cut ones. The blob radii here are deliberately uneven — a full round on two corners and a quarter on the others — so a shape reads as a leaf or a stone rather than as a rounded rectangle.
