A void that glows, not a dark theme

A network grid masked to fade at the edges, radial fields of orange light, glass panels floating above them, and tinted shadows throughout — because a neutral black shadow flattens all of it back into ordinary dark mode.

What the preset decides

Three rules

01

The void on every fill

White on the signature gradient is 3.56 at its dark end and 2.30 at its light end. The background colour sits on it instead and passes at every point along the sweep.

02

Glass is measured against the glow

A five-per-cent white panel over the void is effectively the void; the same panel over an orange field is far lighter. The brightest thing it can float over is what sets its text.

03

Shadows are tinted

Orange and gold, never neutral black. One grey shadow and the page stops looking lit and starts looking like a dark theme with an accent colour.

The pairing, shown rather than claimed

Void on the gradient

5.79 → 8.98:1Void on #EA580C → #F7931A
8.98 → 14.60:1Void on #F7931A → #FFD600

The same two sweeps carrying white would run 3.56 down to 1.41. The gradient really is high-contrast — just not in the direction the specification assumes, which is what makes the error so easy to make.

Questions

Frequently asked

Is this a mock-up or the real thing?
A specimen, hand-built to the preset's specification so the style can be seen whole rather than as a thumbnail. The preset itself is a set of WordPress Theme Settings; a generated site inherits the palette, the three font stacks and the pill buttons. The masked grid, the radial fields and the glass panels are still being folded into the preset and are not all emitted automatically yet.
Why is the button text dark?
Because white on the orange gradient measures 3.56 to one at the dark end and 2.30 at the light end, and fails at both. The background colour on the same sweep runs 5.79 to 8.98. The gradient is excellent as text on the void — it is only as a bed for white that it collapses.
Why does the grid fade out?
Because a grid that runs to the edges reads as a wireframe rather than as depth. The radial mask makes it a field the content sits inside, which is also what keeps the darkness from looking flat.
